For Children
Our office regularly cares for the dental needs of children as young as five years old. However, if you notice that your child has a problem with his/her teeth or gums prior to this age, please schedule an appointment. Dr. Wilmore will see what is going on and refer you to a very caring pedodontist.
It is a good idea to bring your child to your dental checkup when he/she is about two years old. By doing this your child can become familiar with the sights, sounds, smells and friendly helpers in our Houston dental office. We like to call this the Happy Visit. Your child’s independent checkup can be as early as 6-9 months of age. Children should start to visit the dentist when their first baby tooth erupts. The visit will consist of a tooth-by-tooth inspection and a cleaning with a toothbrush. Once your child reaches the age of two years old, the application of fluoride will be incorporated into their dental visit. Dr. Wilmore checks for proper tooth and jaw development, tooth decay and other areas of concern. If your child needs braces, Dr. Wilmore will refer you and your child to the orthodontist in the building next door to her building.
As your child grows, he/she will need regular checkups and hygiene visits to ensure optimal oral health. Our team will teach proper brushing and flossing techniques to your child. We will also teach the child how the foods and drinks he/she consumes affect the health of teeth. Dr. Wilmore may recommend dental sealants or fluoride supplements to help prevent cavities from forming. Sealants are thin, clear coatings that protect hard-to-clean back teeth from the sugars that cause tooth decay. Fluoride is a mineral that strengthens tooth enamel and wards off cavities. Since most bottled water does not contain fluoride, your child may be deficient in this essential mineral. Therefore, when your child is at the dentist office fluoride gel will be placed on his/her teeth. Your child is not to eat or drink anything, even water, for thirty minutes after the fluoride is placed so it can be soaked in by the teeth.
