Creating a Positive Experience: Our Approach to Special Needs Dentistry

When it comes to special needs dentistry in Houston, Texas, Heather M. Wilmore, DDS, is known as a leader in the field. Dr. Wilmore and her team provide thoughtful, individualized care, covering the needs of the entire family.

With comprehensive special needs dental training and a long history of working with children in a pediatric intensive care unit, Dr. Wilmore has the skills that help both patients and parents feel comfortable and confident about dental care.

Many patients ask about our approach to special needs dentistry. This blog covers some of the main ways our team helps create a positive experience and makes dental care easier for patients of all ages with physical and emotional challenges.

Understanding the needs of each patient

Every patient is unique, and that’s especially true for children and adults with developmental, physical, sensory, or cognitive differences. Some key areas that Dr. Wilmore and our team address with special needs patients include:

Sensitivities

Some patients may be sensitive to certain sounds, lights, smells, and tastes. Vibrations from dental tools, like drills, may cause significant sensitivity and anxiety.

Physical challenges

Patients with special needs may struggle to open their mouth fully, to sit still, or to find a comfortable position in the dental chair.

Communication challenges

Communicating when you’re uncomfortable or need a break may be particularly challenging. Some patients may not be able to understand what’s going on, making it difficult to communicate clearly.

A successful dental visit begins with a deep understanding of these and other needs. Dr. Wilmore and our team always take time with patients and parents to make sure we truly understand individual needs.

Creating a calming environment

When the world around you seems calm and relaxing, it’s much easier to feel that way yourself. We go out of our way to make the small adjustments that can make a big difference in atmosphere while undergoing dental procedures.

This might include dimming the lights, playing soothing music the patient enjoys, taking special care to minimize noise, and providing pillows or blankets. Sedation dentistry helps patients relax, and we offer a variety of types.

We also understand that many patients with special needs may feel more relaxed when a caregiver is there beside them. Our team provides a comfortable place for caregivers to stay nearby the patient, where they can provide steady support and help boost confidence.

Physical adjustments

For some special needs patients, small physical adaptations can greatly improve comfort. Examples may include modified positioning in the dental chair and using supportive tools like mouth props to help patients who have difficulty keeping their mouth open.

In some cases, adjusting the pace of dental care can also make a big difference, for example, working on the mouth for 10-minute periods, each followed by a break. Or, a procedure that we might normally complete in one visit can sometimes be spread out over multiple visits if that makes the patient more comfortable.

Thoughtful communication

We believe that good communication is vital for special needs dentistry. Dr. Wilmore discusses the entire process beforehand and explains procedures step by step. She’s always happy to answer questions, too.

We also work with each patient to find a signal they can use to let us know what they need without even saying a word. Many patients use hand signals to communicate that they need a break, they’re uncomfortable, or they need water. This helps many patients feel far more confident before their procedure.
